Date Published: 31/05/2021

We were very sad to hear the news that Eric Carle, author & illustrator of books for children, passed away on 23rd May 2021 at the age of 91. He is most remembered for The Very Hungry Caterpillar which was published in 1969, and has been translated into more than 66 languages and sold more than 50 million copies.

This iconic picture book accompanies many readers through their childhood and it has been described as one of the best picture books of all time. Children love it as it is a story of hope and Carle said it reassures young readers  that ‘you scrawny, ugly little thing will grow up and fly and display your talent and beauty.’

Throughout his career he wrote more than 70 books for young readers, including Brown Bear, Brown Bear What Do You See? and The Very Quiet Cricket.  His hallmark collage illustrations made by layering hand-painted tissue paper, are instantly recognisable and have brought delight to generations of readers.

Go online and visit The Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art and Eric Carle website to learn more about this favourite author and revisit some of his iconic stories.
