Reader’s & Writer’s Week Celebrations
This week the world of literature is celebrated at Mount Alvernia College with our Reader’s & Writer’s Week festivities. The theme for our celebration is Old Worlds, New Worlds, Other Worlds. This is in line with the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s nationwide theme for 2021. Meeting this brief, the iCentre has been transformed into the worlds of outer space, fairy tales, Narnia, underwater, and steampunk and it looks amazing.
We have three key events to celebrate the week:
Read Like a Girl with your Dad
This event invites students and their fathers or significant males in their life to purchase and read a set book and then to attend a pizza night with a presentation by the author of the book. This year our book is A song only I can hear by Barry Jonsberg.
The Reader’s & Writer’s Party
As the name suggests this event has games, music, competitions, party food and CAKE. Attendance requires a book-themed costume and each year this party is a lot of fun.
The Principal’s Reading Challenge launch
This is a hotly contested inter-house reading challenge that takes place over four weeks. Homerooms submit their combined reading minutes each week. At the culmination of the challenge, the winning Home Room is rewarded with a pizza lunch.
As well as these key events, students can win prizes each day by participating in the Reading Trivia Challenge via the Student Notices.
