Published in July of this year, Exit through the gift shop by Maryam Master is a wonderful read. This zine-style novel is receiving many positive reviews and is sure to engage any student who picks it up.
Although the protagonist of the book is a young person dying of cancer, the book dwells on life not death and inspires the reader to value the gifts they take for granted. This is a ‘bucket-list’ book – Ana, the main character, has several things she needs to do in her final year of life and she’s determined to tick these off the list even in the face of an intensive treatment regime, and the biggest of all school-bullies.
This is Maryam Master’s first novel. You can read an interview with her conducted by The Children’s Book Council of Australia via the following link: Meet Maryam Master – Reading Time
