The Man in the Water by David Burton is a coming of age story with a murder mystery that needs to be solved. Fast-paced and suspenseful, it will have YA readers, including reluctant readers, racing through to the end. The issue of suicide is sensitively dealt with and the setting of the novel in a remote mining town in Queensland’s north prompts the reader to think about what is involved living in a community that is often used as a political football.
