White Bird by R J Palacio is an unforgettable read! Branded as a Wonder story, this graphic novel continues and expands on a story in the author’s Auggie & Me about Julian’s grandmother and the tale of her childhood in German-occupied France.
The story takes place during the Holocaust and while tragedy and loss are dealt with, there is a hopeful message about the importance of kindness and speaking out against injustice, no matter what your age.
The novel has been beautifully illustrated by the author herself and is guaranteed to appeal to readers 10+ years. We highly recommend it to both parents and teachers as a way to introduce and talk to younger readers about how the Holocaust happened, whether current events in the world mirror those of the past and, more importantly, what can be done about it.
